A review is made of the investigations carried out by the Fertiliser Manufacturers’ Association to determine the relative accuracy and precision of selected methods of determining the phosphorus content of fertilisers. The methods examined included the statutory gravimetric methods, the quinoline-molybdate method and the van ado-molybdate spectrophotometric method. A detailed statistical analysis is given of a large number of results obtained under controlled conditions in a wide variety of laboratories. This work has resulted in the acceptance of the more recent methods as being as accurate and precise as the older methods, with considerable savings in both time and cost.
