In December 1978, the paper ‘A Case Study in Automatic Packaging’ was presented to the Fertiliser Society by R. J. Milborne, J. E. Leslie and D. Bedford. (Proceedings No. 177). This followed the successful installation of a Rollopack machine at UKF Fertilisers Ltd. plant at I nee.
This second paper reviews packaging developments which have taken place at Ince during the five years following that time. In writing the paper, the bias has been given towards the technology of the processes rather than the mechanics and looks into some of the problems and successes which have been encountered.
The period has been one of considerable change, particularly with, respect to the further automation of 50 kg Bagging Lines. It has included the addition of a fifth line for 50 kg packaging. It has also seen an introduction of shrink-wrapping equipment and recently the commencement of Big Bag filling.
Sections 2 to 4 contain details of major equipment changes and give an indication of the improvement in performance both as a whole and also for individual Bagging Lines. The rest of the paper concentrates on individual equipment items and operating areas and on the development work associated with them.
