This paper highlights problems which were encountered when discharging cargoes of bulk raw materials with crane grabs and examines the first three years operation of an alternative method using a Siwertell bulk discharger. Improvements in off-loading rates that were expected initially have not yet been fully achieved, but dust emission experienced with grabs when discharging potash and, in particular, rock phosphate has been completely eliminated.
